Kapa Haka and Kaupapa Māori Services for Primary Education
The reason Ana and Kopua initiated Manawa Enterprises in the first place was to address the issue in Dunedin of limited kapa haka tutors available to our local schools. It was also set up to give support to future tutors, as it can be a rough road when tutoring independently. This programmes seeks to remedy both issues- providing easily accessible tutors to schools, and supporting tutors by ensuring they have a network of other tutors to work with.
The Te Heretaura programme was initiated in 2017, after kōrero with senior members of Te Aho Paihere and their whānau. Initially it was difficult to set up, as there were many variables we had to think about. This year the benefits of the programme are obvious in the confidence and passion of the tutors.
The tutors attend different high schools in Dunedin, but come together and wānanga with Ana and Kopua at Te Kura Kaupapa Māori O Ōtepoti and Te Whānau Arohanui in Waitati. By helping to tutor their younger counterparts at Te Aho Paihere, these young leaders have progressed considerably since they first met together in 2015.
Acknowledgements to the staff from both the primary schools they work in, and the high schools who monitor their tutorials. Without support this programme will not be able to continue.
